About HSI

The Hospitality Standards Institute is an industry-led training organisation (ITO). Our role is to develop and monitor NZQA unit standards and qualifications for the hospitality industry.

This means we oversee, supervise, assist and review all Nationally Recognised training for chefs, waiters, porters, hotel receptionists, house-keepers, duty managers and bar persons.

We encourage employers to implement systems of in-house training that lead to Nationally Recognised Qualifications for their staff.

We also provide support and guidance to Schools, Polytechnics and Providers that are teaching and assessing Unit Standards in the form of Hospitality Courses.

In order to represent the industry fully, HSI's Board is from a cross section of industry perspectives.

People Passion

Hospitality is all about people. A hospitality business lives or dies on the quality of its people. At HSI we work with all sectors of the hospitality industry, to deliver quality training programmes that help people grow their careers and develop their businesses.

We have a range of qualifications, suited to all levels and all sectors of the industry, from a one day introductory course, to three year Modern Apprenticeships programmes. All our courses deliver skills through on the job training. So as a student you’ll get qualified and paid at the same time, and as a business you’ll get committed staff, trained to meet your needs.

It’s a Kiwi thing

Our courses are written by Kiwis for Kiwis. Our food, wine and tourism industries are renowned globally, and our training makes sure businesses up and down New Zealand deliver the hospitality promise.

Strategic Support

Our work goes beyond designing and delivering courses. We work at a strategic level to provide industry leadership to make sure we have the innovative training in place for the future. We also focus on promoting hospitality as a career choice. Working with schools and colleges we help student discover the values and benefits of working in the hospitality industry.
