A large group of hospitality professionals received their National Diplomas and Certificates at the HSI Achievement Awards, held on December 6th in Auckland. The Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) hosted the event, its largest graduation ceremony yet, with 57 graduates including Modern Apprentices and trainees completing their cookery, food and beverage, and management training.

Steve Hanrahan, Chief Executive of HSI, the industry-training organisation for New Zealand hospitality, emphasises the importance of training in having a skilled and productive workforce. “Business owners often talk about the difficulties of finding staff with the right or enough skills. These hospitality graduates are to be congratulated on their determination and hard work to gain their qualifications, which will be of real benefit to them, and their employers.”

There is clear evidence that having qualified staff is very often a win for the employer. Recent research shows that staff who undertook workplace qualifications actually improved the bottom line of a business, and that they were more likely to stay in that business. Look for the research under RVA (Reporting the Value Add) at www.hsi.co.nz. The case studies highlight the value-add that training gives to a business and to employees. It is often difficult to put a quantifiable return around training. This groundbreaking research seeks to do just that.

Nearly three thousand people have gained national qualifications in the hospitality profession this year, in their chosen career pathways. Those honing their skills as chefs, baristas, hotel and restaurant managers, maitre d’s, and many other roles in New Zealand’s vibrant hospitality sector, undertake between six months to three years of training to earn their nationally recognised qualifications.  These new graduates add even more talent to our local industry.
