Modern Apprenticeship Food Services

Why an Apprenticeship in Food Services?

With an apprenticeship in Food Services you train on the job – that means you earn, learn, get qualified and get a career, all in one go!

It’s a great first step on the career ladder! What’s more, you will be working and learning in the real world, not in a classroom – future employers will love that!

And finally, just to make things even easier, you get your very own Co-ordinator/ Assessor to help you keep on track and offer guidance and assistance along the way.

How does it work?

You work for an employer (we can help you find one if you’re not already working), and go for a short training course every 3–4 months. Then you take the skills and knowledge you learn on those courses and practice them in your workplace. We help pay for your training, so it doesn’t cost you much at all. Better yet you get paid, get trained and get qualified all at once!

Who are they for?

Food Services Apprenticeships are open to anyone wanting to make a career in Food Services. You might be a school leaver, or you may have worked in the industry for sometime already. If you are aged 16 – 21 you can become a Modern Apprentice. But if you are over 21 you can still complete this same programme as an Industry Trainee. There is no age limit.

What will I get out of it?

Have a look at the career pathway outlined below. Which of these roles would you like to have? This apprenticeship will help you become a supervisor or catering manager of the future. It includes both the National Certificate in Food Service Operations at Level 3 and the National Certificate in Food Service Operations at Level 4.

So you will get qualifications and a great job in a great industry!

What do I do next?

If you are currently looking for the right position and want some help, contact us. We can help you to locate a suitable employer, and once you are employed, can work with you and your employer to sign you up as a Modern Apprentice or Industry Trainee.

All you need to do is send through your current CV and a covering letter explaining:

  • what experience you have;
  • why you want to do the Food Service Apprenticeship.

Send it to us and we will then help you find the right position. If you are already with an employer who is committed to training then contact us so we can talk to you and your employer about becoming a Food Service Apprentice.

What if you are still at school?

If you are still in school, there are things you can do to get a head start in the hospitality industry. Employers are looking for young motivated people who are good communicators, take pride in their appearance, can understand and follow instructions and have a basic level of hospitality skills.

You can pick up a lot of these general skills by doing unit standards in interpersonal communications, reading, writing, numeracy, measurement and mathematical processes.

And don’t forget those basic hospitality skills. Completing some of the units in the National Certificate in Hospitality (Level 1) is a great first step towards getting these skills. If your school doesn’t offer these units, contact us on 0800 ASK 4 HSI (0800 275 4474).

Another very important way to get a head start is by getting practical experience in the industry. You can do this with part time work, work experience, or by joining the Gateway Programme if your school offers it.

How does the training work?

  • Three year apprenticeship
  • Mixture of on-job and off-job training
  • Nine 2–3 day block courses with a Training Provider spread over the three years
  • On-job practical training from your employer
  • On-job practical assessment with the HSI Food Services Coordinator/Assessor
  • Regular visits and coaching from the HSI Food Services Coordinator/Assessor

Travel policy

Some travel may be required to get to the block courses. HSI will help you with this. We will discuss the HSI travel policy with you when you sign up.

How much will it cost?

The cost of the apprenticeship is $1000 (including GST) per year. The year commences when an apprentice is signed onto a training plan. The apprentice can pay via a direct debit.
