Gateway FAQs

1.)  What is a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)?

The Memorandum of Agreement is an agreement between the school and HSI that must be adhered to when placing a student into work based learning.  Every school participating in the Gateway programme delivering HSI unit standards must have a Memorandum of Agreement in place.

The MOA covers a period of one calendar year. It allows selected unit standards to be taught and assessed in a workplace environment. If there is additional students added during this time an addendum to the MOA must be completed.

2.)  What is an HSI Registered workplace?

All work places used for gateway work based learning programmes must be registered with HSI. This is a quality checking process to ensure that the workplace is able to train to the level required with the placement. Your local schools advisor will be able to advise you if a workplace is registered or not. If a student is placed in a non-registered workplace  the HSI Regional Advisor will be able to register.  There is no cost in registering a workplace.

3.)  Who arranges the HSI workplace assessor for gateway?

If you already know of and have used an HSI assessor previously and wish to use them again please do so, please inform HSI of the relationship. If you require help with finding an HSI assessor please call your local HSI Regional Advisor who can arrange an assessor for you.

4.)  Is there a cost for an HSI assessor?

Yes there is a cost involved for an assessor. This will vary on the assessor and how much they get involved in the process. Please contact your HSI Regional Advisor for further information.

5.)  Who is to report the unit standards?

All hospitality unit standards (Gateway included) are reported through the schools system to NZQA using the schools own provider code.  If the Gateway units are not within the schools scope of accreditation, HSI can grant permission to use the HSI provider code, if there is a Memorandum of Agreement in place and approval by HSI.
