In order to offer opportunities to use this first qualification as a stepping stone in a hospitality career, the qualification shares a number of unit standards with other national certificates in this subfield. This national certificate recognises knowledge and skills in a front office reception role in commercial accommodation environments. These could range from:

- Hotel establishments
Holders of this qualification are able to perform routine reception duties in any of these establishments.
The qualification also recognises a range of generic skills, such as interpersonal interaction, personal presentation, and customer service that are core to hospitality career opportunities. The optional strand to this qualification recognises the abilities of reception staff in hotel systems, the operation of computerised booking systems and handling foreign exchange transactions. This optional strand is likely to be taken up by candidates who work in the hotel sector and is designed to recognise these discrete skills.
