Modern apprenticeships
What is a Modern Apprenticeship?
A Modern Apprenticeship in hospitality is a great way to get your career moving - you'll learn on the job, get trained, get qualified, and get paid for it!
What’s more, you’ll be working and learning in the real world, not in the classroom. There are three types of Modern Apprenticeships currently available: Cookery, Food & Beverage Service and Food Services.
Who are they for?
Anybody from 16 to 21 who wants to make a career in hospitality. You might be a school leaver, or you might already be working in the industry.
How does it work?
You work for an employer (we can help you find one if you’re not already working), and go to a short training course every six months. You then take the skills and knowledge you learn on those courses and put them into practice in your workplace. We help pay for your training, so it doesn’t cost you much at all.
What qualification do I get?
A Modern Apprenticeship leads to National Qualifications at Level 3 and 4. From there the opportunities are endless. These are industry recognised qualifications that employers look for. You’ll also learn skills that you can take anywhere – like customer service, problem-solving and teamwork. Another bonus is that you can work at your own pace; it usually takes about three years to complete, but it can be less.

The Group Modern Apprenticeship scheme
We also run a special scheme in the Auckland region. In the Group Apprenticeship scheme (in association the Restaurant Association Education Trust), you will be employed by the Restaurant Association. Peter Le Grice, the Group Modern Apprenticeship Coordinator will help to match you to an employer, assist with administration, mentor you and review your progress along the way. With this scheme you'll have the security of knowing that if things don't work out at your first workplace, we can help you find another. You'll also have the flexibility to gain wider experience.
The cost of off-job training is heavily subsidised by HSI and paid by the apprentice directly to HSI. For further information on the Group Modern Apprenticeship Scheme please contact:
