Hospitality ITO Adds New Talent

Three new members were welcomed to the HSI Board by Carol Stigley, chair of the Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) - the industry training organisation for hospitality. In announcing their appointments, Ms Stigley said, “We’re about growing talent in New Zealand hospitality and we welcome leaders from the sector who can help take us forward in that mission.”

Cherie Freeman is the new Provider Representative (polytechs, schools and private trainers) on the HSI Board. Cherie was recently appointed the head of hospitality at Wellington Institute of Technology (Weltec) after moving from the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT).  Cherie has extensive experience in the hotel industry, and is also active in a range of hospitality competitions, notably as a judge of Front of House events, where she is one of the few people holding a Level 5 Front of House judging qualification. Cherie also has a strong background in training and was awarded the HSI Excellence in Training Award for 2006.

Oscar Nathan joins the HSI Board as the new Maori Representative. Oscar is from Ngāpuhi, Te Aupouri and Te Rarawa descent, and has varied interests and experience in tourism, hospitality and IT. Currently Board Deputy Chairman of the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association (TIANZ), he has been the Acting Chief Executive of TIANZ, the CEO of Tamaki Heritage Experiences and CEO of Tourism Rotorua.
Oscar is the Board Chairman of Maori at Tourism Rotorua and is a member of several other boards including the Rotorua Tourism Board, the NZ Maori Arts and Craft Institute, the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and the Waiariki Institute of Technology. Oscar’s  considerable experience in the hospitality and tourism industries, along with his strong links with Maori, will be a great asset to the HSI Board.

Ruth Turner is the new Food Services Representative on the HSI Board. Ruth has spent her working life in a variety of roles within the food services and bulk catering sector from Executive Chef at Databank and Turnbull House through to management roles at the Company Catering Company and Spotless Services (NZ) Limited. She is currently the Sector Manager of Internal Services at Corrections Inmate Employment and says her management roles in both public and private sectors have required strong links with training. Ruth is looking forward to using her cross-section of experience and working with the HSI Board to promote the food services sector and deliver on its training needs.

“The wealth of experience that all three have benefit the HSI board and the industry, and we are looking forward to their input. They will certainly be a great boost to us in achieving HSI’s goals of developing and promoting work-based training qualifications,” Ms Stigley said.

She noted their strong commitment to training, and that they would provide “additional leadership for HSI to achieve our strategic goals; in particular national qualifications delivered by all providers, engaging with all sectors of the industry, and strengthening our support of Maori.”

The new HSI Board members take up their appointment from April.
