Hospitality industry in training for the Rugby World Cup 2011

In the lead up to the Rugby World Cup in September 2011, New Zealand’s hospitality industry is preparing to host an expected 80,000 visitors over 45 days.

Ian Crowe, Logistics and Hospitality Manager for Rugby World Cup 2011 will speak at a breakfast in Christchurch next week to ensure local hospitality operators put their best foot forward in the countdown to the biggest sporting event New Zealand has ever seen.

The breakfast kicks off the HSI/HANZ Business of Hospitality workshops, an event providing practical tips to Canterbury and West Coast hospitality operators covering everything from interior design tips to slashing kitchen costs.

The hospitality industry is already a huge part of New Zealand’s workforce, with one in seven New Zealanders employed in its various sectors, including restaurants, cafés, accommodation providers and the food services industry. This equates to over 136,000 people and an estimated extra 10,000 hospitality employees will be needed just to cater for rugby followers from around the world next year.

Flying in from Sydney is hospitality management and marketing expert Ken Burgin, who will be sharing his secrets to success with local hospitality businesses. Ken has a strong background in hospitality, having owned several successful cafés and restaurants in Australia. His passion and vast knowledge have helped many businesses to lift their game and succeed. His website www.profitablehospitality.com has 14,000 members from around the world.

Ken is looking forward to helping New Zealand businesses achieve excellence, saying “The Rugby World Cup is a huge event for your country, bringing in international visitors who expect a high standard of service. Much like the All Blacks, New Zealand’s hospitality industry will be competing on a world stage to show that they are top-class hosts.”

“This is a great opportunity for cafés, restaurants, bars and accommodation providers throughout New Zealand to provide a welcoming atmosphere for these visitors and show them Kiwi hospitality at its best.”

The HSI/HANZ Business of Hospitality workshop is taking place at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium on Tuesday 25th May. More workshops are scheduled for Thursday 27 May in Dunedin; Wednesday 1 June in Wellington, Thursday 3 June in Rotorua and Monday 14 June in Auckland.
